To prepare our Summer 2011 crias for the annual Vancouver Island Expidition (VIEX) we wanted to halter train them. It takes only a few minutes a day and a couple of days in a row to make our and their lifes just so much easier and also safer. Alpacas are smart – once used to the halter and trained in walking on a lead, they follow calm, instead of getting dragged, pulled or pushed. Going to a fair, the Vet’s office or for example a new owner will be no more drama – not to forget how much safer it is in any kind of emergency.
Our WWOOFER’s (Members of World Wide Opportunities on Organic Farms) did a pretty good job. Showing a lot of patience they gently trained our crias in accepting the halter and walking on a lead.
